Follow Friday - Moms should stay in photos

If you are like me, you spend a lot of time taking photos. As genealogists we love photographs and usually are the ones to remember to pull out the camera to make new memories for our descendants. But how often are you in the photo? I, for one, have very few to no photos of myself. I've never thought of myself as photogenic and I don't like to have my photo taken unless I'm "gussie up." But a while back I read an article by Allison Tate here, which describes her own fear of photos and the need to put ourselves back in the picture. While this is written from a mother's point of view, it is just as true for fathers, grandparents or any relative.
Case in point, I had to reach back to March to find a photo of me with my kids.

What you say is so very true. I have always been the photographer in our family and my sons are now grown. Sadly there are many pictures of my sons and their father and very few of me. Several years ago we took a trip to Disney World with our 5 yr old grandson and his parents for his birthday. I recently made him a scrapbook to commemorate this trip and wouldn't you know it, there are no pictures of me to put in it!

Thank you, Donna! I originally heard about Allison Tate's article on the evening news and couldn't help but cry because it rang so true with me. Teresa, it's the same with me. And in my husband's defense, for so many years I told him to not take photos of me because I look bad that he is now trigger shy. So I have two ways out: either make myself look better everyday or suck it up and deal with photos that aren't as magnificent. If I think about it, there are enough "good" photos for my children to know I wasn't an old hag. ;) Ever since I read the article I've made a supreme effort to change my ways. This Thanksgiving holiday is our chance...be sure to get yourself in FRONT of the camera!
